Favorite Photo Locations – Maui

Many great photo locations require perservance, and sometimes even hardship, to capture engaging images. But if you’d like to combine vacation relaxation with photo opportunity, a visit to Maui can satisfy both.

In addition to bringing your favorite camera for scenics, invest in rugged camera that you can take underwater for snorkeling or exploring waterfalls. I like the Olympus TG-2 compact camera that sells for $379. It can shoot underwater to a depth of 50 feet, includes a built-in GPS unit that geotags images, and uses a fast f/2.0 zoom lens.

Because of the abundant fish and plant life in Maui waters, you only need basic snorkeling gear that you can rent at any of the numerous dive shops on the island. The best underwater photography is usually in the mornings before the winds kick up.

A good location to get your feet wet is Black Rock in Ka’anapali. This large lava outcropping covered in coral is attractive to fish and divers alike. You can capture beautiful images just a few feet under the surface. The beach is off Highway 30, behind Whaler’s Village. After a morning in the water, you can relax midday around the pool and spend time with your travel companions. But as twilight approaches, be sure to have your camera handy for those spectacular Hawaiian sunsets. This is a great time to try your hand at HDR photography too. Not only can you capture the colorful sunset, but also the textures and tones in the foreground.

Once you return home, share your images with others by making prints of your favorites. They will serve as both artwork for your home, and an opportunity to relive the experiences from your adventure.
